Aviary
Southern Alberta Art Gallery

Lethbridge, AB

Aviary is an installation addressing the exhibition site and the community supporting the Southern Alberta Art Gallery (SAAG) in Lethbridge, Alberta. The public art gallery is housed in the town's former library and once contested gift from the Carnegie family. Lethbridge is a town that boasts one of the largest public collections of contemporary and modern art in Canada. It is also a blue-collar, small, rural town in the Alberta badlands. From the beginning, mine owners who built the town understood the value of supporting diverse centres of cultural activity for community development. To this day the city continues to support an excellent university, a wide range of theatre and music companies and several art galleries.

Lethbridgians were asked to submit drawings of birds for the Aviary project at SAAG. With the support of the gallery's marketing guru, local media, schools and sports teams, more than 5000 drawings of birds were contributed to the project. These drawings were catalogued and bound and displayed in the installation with a large 6-panel digital print. The large image of the exterior of the gallery is made of thousands of pixels and each pixel holds the name of one of the contributors to the Aviary project.
