This project is the first version of Entomology, a bug made of bugs.
The Entomology project marks a turning point in process, intent and product (almost by accident and certainly out of necessity). Although the patterns for the image had been created and 10,000 rubber bugs had arrived in time, it became immediately obvious that the installation could not be completed by me and the gallery staff in time. It was mathematically impossible.
During my tenure as Director of Stride Gallery, and as an emerging artist, I had worked with many people who promised to return the favour when I need it. I called on every one of them. They came. What resulted was a finely honed production line reliant on specialization and innovation to finish the work on time. Production was social involving friends, family, collegues and strangers and sparked a decade long exploration in community-based projects, public involvement in the exhibition venue and de-mystification of contemporary art.
