Developed for Art's Birthday celebrations at EMMEDIA, Tea for Tarts is a hospitality project intended to create a social space for intimate conversation. Inspired by Sarah Cook / CRUMB Come for Tea workshops, Tea for Tarts evolved over the years through projects from like John Will's Birthday, the Carpet 'N Toast Gallery and recent SOUP works. While tea may not have the same connotations in Canada as the UK, Canadians do love the comfort of a warm drink on a cold wintery night. The piece was also inspired by traditions around holiday baking. Trays of baking sat in the freezer heavily guarded for holiday guests and gifts, but by January we were getting butter tarts for dessert at lunch and invitations to post-Christmas pot-lucks! The supply and demand economics of food.
Based on an economy of trade and barter, Birthday Celebrants were asked to bring tarts in exchange for tea. See the call below.

Shelley Ouellet will be creating a Tearoom in the Fairy Tales office for Art’s Birthday. Throughout the evening of celebrations, performances, screenings and talks, the Tearoom will offer a friendly space for conversation and libations. High Tea will be served throughout the evening at a special price, but Shelley encourages birthday revelers to trade tarts for tea. Dust off your cookbooks and clean out your freezers because donating 6 tarts to the Tearoom table will get you bragging rights and a very special cupful. This offer is only available at Art’s Birthday. Pity!
