Administrative staff from Calgary's artist-run organizations in film, visual and media arts were invited for an intimate lunch. Two scheduled luncheons allowed a staff member to attend one week and "mind the store" allowing their collegue to attend the following week. Transforming EMMEDIA's screening room was easy especially when the smell of soup filled the room. Incorporating more than a decade in the food service and hospitality industries, where I have been employed throughout my artistic career. I focused on setting the table with interesting guests and my best vegetarian recipe. Squash soup, bread, coffee and tea for twelve at twelve.
Representatives from EMMEDIA, Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers, Calgary Underground Film Festival, Alberta Media Arts Alliance Society, Epcor Centre, Truck Gallery, Stride Gallery, The New Gallery, Quickdraw Animation Society, Fairy Tales Presentation Society as well as a couple of active locals from the art community came to dine. Over lunch conversations drifted from professional and personal backgrounds to AFA funding cuts to supporting young writers to redefining terms like feminist and queer in Calgary. It was a wonderful opportunity to gather all these organizations with no other agenda but food and conversation.
Vicki Chau for all the beautiful documentation even though I was resisting documentation. Thanks also to Tomas for giving me so much other material to consider while I developed the project and finally thanks to all my guests for being so delightful and insightful. I hope this marks the begining of a new series of social gatherings.
