Urban Growth
2002 Alberta Biennial

Edmonton Art Gallery, Edmonton, AB
Nickel Arts Museum Gallery, Calgary, AB

Urban Growth is an interactive, multimedia project examining the underground and above ground network of public and semi-public walkways throughout downtown Edmonton and Calgary. Extensive research into the development and proliferation of the walkway systems in each city was presented in a Shockwave Flash movie, in printed documents and in an online survey. The interactive Flash movie allows users to scan aerial photographs of downtown Edmonton and Calgary to reveal pathways, historical tidbits, municipal policies and tenancy of major buildings in each city's core. Comments and anecdotes about use of hte system, criticisms and praise were sought from the exhibition visitors in Edmonton and Calgary as well as through an on-line survey. Recent policies for Edmonton "Pedway" system and Calgary's "+15 Walkways" are based on the survey results and opinions of less than 200 randomly selected people. 247 specific individuals responded to the Urban Growth project survey.
